Laundry during your camping holiday

Doing laundry during your camping holiday isn’t exactly the most fun activity. But if you’re travelling for a longer period or camping with the whole family, doing some washing in between is unavoidable. If you’re lucky, the campsite will have washing machines. If not, there are still other options. On Flemish tourist campsites, a separate area with a wash basin must be provided near the sanitary facilities so you can do some hand washing. You can also use a so-called washing bucket. Fill the bucket with lukewarm water and some detergent, then top it up until about two fingers below the rim. Remove the air, shake it vigorously, and vent it again until no air remains in the bucket.

Thanks to the vacuum created, rising air bubbles pull the dirt upwards. You can then drain the dirty water first, take out the laundry and rinse it thoroughly. Small loads can also be washed in a sealable canister with some detergent, which you can take along during a longer car journey. The sloshing of the water mimics the action of a washing machine.
If there is no washing machine or dryer on the campsite and you’re really desperate, look for a self-service launderette in a nearby village or town. Set an alarm on your mobile phone to remember when the wash cycle is finished, so others don’t have to wait or remove your laundry from the machine.
